A Tree Fell on My House. What Should I Do First?

Get everyone out of the affected rooms, stay away from any wires and report downed lines. Then photograph the damage, contact your insurer, and arrange for a tree crew to remove the tree before a roofer tarps the roof.

Is anyone hurt or in danger?

Get people out of damaged rooms. If you smell gas, leave the house and report it. Treat any wire touching the tree as live.

What about power lines?

Never touch a tree that is in contact with a line. Report it to the electric utility or 911 and keep everyone well back.

Should I take photos?

Yes, before anything is moved: the tree, the roof, inside damage, the root plate or break point. Your insurer will want them.

Who removes the tree?

A tree crew experienced with trees on structures. They take it off in controlled pieces so the roof isn't damaged further. See storm and emergency tree service.

Then what?

Once the tree is off, a roofer tarps or repairs the roof. Keep receipts for everything.

Why do trees fall in storms here?

Middle Tennessee's spring and fall storms can bring strong winds and tornadoes, and very heavy rain can saturate the soil. During the May 2010 floods, some areas had more than 19 inches of rain in two days. Trees with weak roots or decay are the first to go.

Can I cut it up myself?

Not if it is on a structure, near lines or large. Fallen trees store tension in bent limbs and trunks that can spring free when cut. Leave it to a crew with the right equipment and training. If the tree only hit a fence or yard, it is less urgent, but still have it removed soon, before it settles further.
